Our approach to history

To preserve not merely the memory of history, but its meaning.

Stand where it happened

History makes most sense in the place where it happened. We read castles, battlefields and towns on the ground: the slope of an approach, the line of a moat, the view a lord chose to command.

Read the stones carefully

We separate what the sources tell us from what tradition has added, and we say so when historians disagree. Understanding begins with honesty about what we know.

Return to the people

Every wall was ordered, paid for and built by people making decisions under pressure. We tell the story of those decisions and of the generations they shaped.
